Altar of Santa Agata in Basilica of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria in Galatina, Apulia in South Italy. Basilica is a national monument in Romanesque and Gothic style. Interior is completely frescoed towards the end of the fourteenth century by local workers. The popular piety aroused by the martyrdom of Saint Agatha (c. 229-235, † 5 February 251), the Sicilian virgin who testified to her unshakeable faith in Christ during Decius' persecutions, spread quickly throughout Christendom.
