Engraving of a variety of lascars, who were sailors or militiamen from the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, the Arab world, British Somaliland, or other land east of the Cape of Good Hope. They were employed on European ships from the 16th century until the middle of the 20th century, but often suffered great poverty when the voyage was over and they were back on European soil.
