Religion.—Though William Penn granted reli-gious toleration throughout his colony, still in maintainingit towards Catholics, he was bitterly opposed by his ownpeople. In 1686, he mentions an aged priest among theinhabitants. The first chapel in which the Holy Sacrificewas offered, in 1686, was a woodenbuilding on the northwest corneraf Front and Walnut streets. 11. Delaware.—When NewTork passed into the hands of theDuke of York, Delaware formed apart of his possessions.
