Huey helicopter shot of the Lion's Head and Table Mountain, turning south along the Atlantic Coast, Cape Town, South Africa

This aerial shot, from a Huey helicopter tour of the Cape Peninsula, shows the Lion's Head, as we leave Cape Town's City Bowl behind and turn south over Bantry Bay towards Clifton. Geologically, we see massive granite in the flanks of the Lion's Head, overlain by the sandstone layers of the Table Mountain Group. The huge mass of the Peninsula Granite, intruded at great depth in the crust, was exposed by erosion, before the overlying sedimentary beds were laid down on its surface, so,e 450 million years ago. The corner of Table Mountain, overlooking the Atlantic, is the location of the 'long drop', which, at 112 m, is the highest commercial abseil in the world.
