Lenticular cloud over the mountains with a palm

Lenticular cloud over the San Bernardino Mountains in southern California. Lenticular clouds are created by waves (mountain waves) of air resulting from strong winds forced over high mountains. As the air is forced to the high points of the wave, moisture in the air condenses due to the reduced temperatures at higher altitudes to form a cloud. Pilots flying in mountainous regions know to steer far away from these clouds since they are visible indicators of these strong and dangerous winds.
