Prince William/Willem V 1748-1806. After the death of William IV, Princess Anna of Hanover acted as regent for her son. After her death, the Duke of Brunswick, acting commander of the army took over as guardian. In 1792 war broke out between French revolutionaries and a coalition of Austria, Russia, Britain and the Netherlands. War went badly and following the French invasion in 1795 William fled to England. He spent the last 5 years of his life in Germany.
