Take of the oil cake meal one quart, warm water to makea thick mush, a piece of coffee sack about two feet square;spread it out on the floor and place the mush in the center, CORNS. 83 pat it down a little hollow and pour one ounce of spirits ofturpentine in this hollow, then set the foot on top of the mushand gather the coffee sack up around the leg and tie a stoutstring or buckle a short strap between the fetlock and hooftight enough to keep it in place. Allow the poultice to re-main for 24 hours when it should be renewed. A poulticeshould have warm water poured over and down the leg into itonce every two or three hours, as warmth and moisture are itsessential THE PROPER WAY TO SHOE FOR CORNS WHEN YOU ARECOMPELLED TO USE CALKS. You will now remove the poultice and pare off the walland sole alike until you have removed the corn, do not dig ahole into the foot leaving the wall and bar to form a funnelshaped opening to receive and hold all the dirt and filth thatcomes in contact with the foot. I have seen horses die of locked-jaw from this cause. Cut away the wall from the quarter 84 CORNS. back to the depth of the corn, as shown in the engraving. Ifthe corn has suppurated a free opening must be made, afterwhich you are to syringe it out with spirits turpentine andthen pour in a little hot tar, after which you may put in asmall piece of cotton ; enough to keep the dirt out, but notenough to fill the opening, causing pressure. You may have torepeat your poultice now for two or three days, or even longer inbad cases. If the hoof becomes hard and dry afcer you removeyour
