So, you see, its outward appearance is lovelyand peaceful; but, under the water, it is at war. Dangling from the bubbles lower surface aremany blue feelers, or tentacles; some of these areshort and thick, but the others—with which thecreature wriggles itself along—are of great length,and twist and twirl about rapidly and gracefully,bearing myriads of very fine hairs that prick likethose of the nettle. Perhaps a hungry or carelesslittle sardine, seeing the squirming blue things,. THE PORTUGUESE MAN-OF-WAR. grabs one of them, hoping for a pleasant meal;but the tempting, worm-like feelers wind theirfolds around him, and he dies, poor fellow,—but he dies at once. While he is being lifted toward the short thickarms, five or six very small blue fish dart out fromamong them, and presently join in the feast. Theseseem to belong to the man-of-war,—as the smallboats belong to some huge fighting-ship,—andthey flit about unharmed, and quite at homeamong the deadly tentacles. 412 OUR MUSIC PAGE.
