Early in 1862 the erection of a Courthouse was the discussion of the matter it was discovered thatthe County had no title to the public square, which it hadbeen reserving for County purposes. It will be recalled thata few years previously, after Tumwater had offered a bonusfor the location of the County seat there, that Olympia madea deed to the County for the public square (bounded by , ]\Iain and Washington Streets). Later it was foundthat Edmund Sylvester had donated this to the city for parkl)urpc)ses exclusively, hence the conveyance by the cit}^ to theCount}^ was invalid.
