Inthe jet condenser theexhaust steam comes incontact with a spray ofcold water, and, beingcondensed, creates apartial vacuum. Anair-pump is requiredto remove to the con-densed steam and in-jected water, and thishot water can be usedto feed the boiler. In the surface con-denser the exhauststeam does not comeinto direct contact withthe cold condensingwater. The condenserresembles a small mul-titubular vertical boiler, through the tubes ofwhich a current of coldwater is constantly cir-culated. The steamexhausts into the shellof the boiler, andcoming into contactwith the numerous coldtubes, is condensed, thesame effect being ob-tained as in the jetcondenser, except thatthe water from thecondensed steam doesnot mingle with that THE CORLISS ENGINE. 57. employed for condensation. The hot water from the condensed steamis removed by means of an air-pump, and can then be returned tothe boiler. The pumps of independent condensers are driven either by means 58 MACHINERY FOR METALLIFEROUS MINES, of a belt from a pulley on the engine shaft, or from a rocker shaft, whichin turn is driven from a connecting rod attached to the crank pinof the engine. In other cases they are made completely independentof the existing engine, and the air-pump is driven by a small steamcylinder direct as shown in figs. 102 and 103 (page 142). The Corliss Engine.—^The competition between the variousmachinery makers with a view to produce the engine which would workwith the greatest economy of fuel, has led to many and great improvementswhich are, indeed, too numerous to mention. As a type of the classof engine which has attained nearest to perfect
