Battle of Sempach, 9 July 1386. Leopold III (1351-1386), Duke of Austria, was defeated by the army of the Old Swiss Confederacy. The heroic death of Arnold Winkelried, a Swiss peasant who decided the victory of the Confederate troops. According to legend, the Swiss were initially unable to break through the narrow ranks of the Habsburg pikemen. Winkelried shouted that he would break through the line of soldiers and then throw himself on the Austrian pikes, knocking some of them down with his body, thus breaking through the Austrian front and allowing the Swiss to attack and achieve victory.
