The Window of Remembrance, at the Berlin Wall Memorial, was built in 2010 to remember the victims of the Berlin Wall. The memorial, in corroded metal, to simulate the division of the Iron Curtain, includes photographs, dates of birth and death of people escaping or deemed to be escaping by the border guards. The top row, left to right, includes Karl Heinz Kube (10/41949-16/12/1966) shot, aged 17; Max Sahmland (28/3/1929- 27/1/1967), shot aged 37; Elke Weckeiser (31/10/1945), shot aged 22; Bernd Lehman (31/7/1949-23/5/1968), drowned in River Spree, aged 18, the guards being accused of obstructing the rescue; Klaus Jurger Kluge (25/7/1948-13/9/1969), shot, aged 21; Christel Wehage (15/12/1946-18/3/1970), suicide, aged 26, after failed plane hijacking; Willi Born (29/7/1950-7/7/1970, suicide, aged 19, after failed escape attempt; Helmut Kliem (26/6/1939-13/11/1970, shot, aged 31, after driving a motorbike up to the border zone. The middle row shows Franciszek Piesik (23/11/1942-17/10/1967), drowned, aged 24; Dieter Weckeiser (15/12/1943-19/2/1968), shot, aged 25; Siegfried Krug (22/7/1939-6/7/1968), shot, aged 28, when trying to surrender; Leo Lis (10/5/1924-20/9/1969), shot, aged 45; Eckhard Wehage (8/7/1948-10/3/1970), suicide, aged 22, after failed plane hijacking; Friedhelm Ehrlich (11/7/1956-2/8/1978), shot, aged 22, after simulating the shooting of a gun to a border guard; Christian Peter Friese (5/1/1948-25/12/1970), shot, aged 22, jumping out of a police station window. The bottom row includes Herbert Mende (9/12/1939-10/3/1968), shot, aged 39; Horst Korner (12/7/1947-15/11/1968), shot, aged 21; Johannes Lange (17/12/1940-9/4/1969), shot, aged 28; Heinz Muller (16/5/1943-19/6/1970), shot, aged 27, after falling into water; Gerald Thiem (6/9/1968-7/8/1970, shot, aged 41.
