Atahualpa (1497-1533), the 13th and last Emperor of the Inca Empire. Atahualpa became Emperor after defeating his half brother Huascar in a civil war that began after the death of their father. In 1532 the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro entered the Inca Empire and was invited to meet Atahualpa. At the meeting the Spanish killed thousands of Incas and captured Atahualpa. Atahualpa was held hostage for several months during which time he gave Pizarro huge amounts of gold, silver and jewels, supposedly as a ransom. In 1533, fearing attack from the Incas, Pizarro had Atahualpa executed.
