The San Rafael Reef, at the eastern edge of the San Rafael Swell, as seen from Interstate 70 near the town of Green River, Utah. These flatirons (also known as a hogback) are made of Navajo sandstone, a formation that is much more resistant to erosion than the layers above or below it. The rock, once level, has been tilted upward as the ground behind it rose.
