SLAVEN, Henry Bartholomew, was bornnear Picton, Ontario, Oct. 19, 1853, son of PatrickSlaven, a farmer and stock raiser, descended fromancestors who were members of the learned profes-sions, statesmen and business men. Henrys earlyeducation was obtained at the common schools. Atthe age of thirteen he left the farm, obtaining a sit-uation as druggists assistant, working in the day-time, and attending school atnight. At the age of seventeenhe was graduated from the On-taiio college of pharmacy, andwent to Philadelphia to studymedicine, attending the univer-sity for nearly two years, but be-ing too young to graduate, ac-cepted a situation in a large whole-sale drug establishment. In 1873he took the sole management ofa large wholesale and retail drughouse in Canada. Early in 1876he was with a party of engineersto the British Northwest, going byway of the lakes to what is nowPort Arthur, and thence to Win-nipeg, Manitoba.
