XB-70 Valkyrie supersonic test bomber. Historical image of the North American XB-70 Valkyrie supersonic bomber prototype aircraft taking off. This large six-engined bomber was capable of reaching Mach 3 plus, while flying at altitudes of 21,000 metres. However, it was never built but the two test aircraft that were constructed were used by NASA from 1966 to 1969 for a series of tests in order to aid better understanding of supersonic flight with larger aeroplanes.
