Beautiful remote sandy beach at Balnakeil Bay, the Cape Wrath peninsula on the left, Sutherland, Northwest Highlands Scotland UK
On the highest point on the headland of Faraid Head, beyond Balnakeil Bay, Durness, Sutherland, is a Ministry of Defence base. Military exercises take place over the sea in this area, and on the adjoining mainland peninsula of Cape Wrath. To the northwest of, and visible from Balnakeil Bay, is a small island called An Garbh-eilean, which is used as a target in live firing exercises.
