Andrewsarchus scavenging carrion, illustration. This extinct prehistoric mammal lived from 48 to 41 million years ago, during the Middle Eocene. Its fossils have been found in Mongolia. It was a large and powerful predator, with a skull length of 83 centimetres. It is classified as an ungulate (hoofed animal).
