Rhine flooding in Germany. ERS-1 multitemporal radar image showing the flooding of the River Rhine near Cologne, Germany, in 1993. This image is made from three frames taken on different dates in December 1993. Areas with no change, such as Cologne at centre, show in tones of grey. The river is the black line running from top left to lower right. Magenta colours on the river banks show the flooded areas. The magenta hues in the mountains at upper right are fresh falls of snow. The greenish tint to much of the land indicates increased moisture content. The data for this image were gathered by the ERS-1 European radar mapping satellite.
