MEMOIR MEMOIR OF COLONEL CHARLES OKELLY, AND HIS DESCENDANTS, BY THE ^HARLES OKELLY, the elder son of John OKelly, eighthlordof the mtmor of Screen, County Galway, by Isina, daugh-ter of Sir William Hill, of Ballybeg, County Carlow, wasborn at the Castle of Screen, in 1621. His origin was oneof the most ancient and honourable in his native province;he being the thirty-ninth in descent from Maine Mor, or theGreat, first conqueror, in the fifth century, of the Firbolgsand Attacots, in the extensive territory hence styled Hy-Many, and subse-quently OKoUys Country; the Princes or Chieftains of which, Irom thatperiod, ranked among the most considerable in Ireland. Young Charles, as aRoman Catholic, was sent, for his education, to St. Omer, in the Netherlands,then forming part of the dominions of the Spanish monarchy.
