Vintage photo of boxer Stanley Ketchel (1886 - 1910) - two-time World Middleweight Champion. Ketchel, whose real name was Stanislaw (or Stanislaus) Kiecal, was born to Polish immigrants in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, and was nicknamed "The Michigan Assassin". In a series of fights in 1908 he won, lost and then regained the middleweight title to become the first two-time champion and he is generally regarded as one of the greatest middleweights in boxing history. Ketchel also sometimes fought heavier men and unsuccessfully challenged Jack Johnson for the world heavyweight title in 1909 - knocking Johnson down before himself being knocked out. Ketchel was murdered at the age of just 24 while training at a ranch in Missouri. Photo circa 1909 by Bain News Service.
