A pay phone controlled by the Titan media company in midtown Manhattan in New York on Monday, October 6, 2014. The New York City Dept. of Technology and Telecommunications allowed Titan to install tracking beacons on 500 phone booths in Manhattan in New York. The beacons were installed without any formal approval process and can transmit and track mobile devices sending location specific advertisements to Gimbal enabled apps. The company is now in the process of removing the devices after media reports uncovered them. (© Richard B. Levine)
