Double beehive cell, part of an early Christian monastery on Eileach an Naoimh (rocky place of the saint) island, Garvellachs, Argyll.

Double beehive cell, part of an early Christian monastery on Eileach an Naoimh (rocky place of the saint) amongst the Garvellachs (rough rocks) in the Firth of Lorn. Once believed to be 'Hinba' founded by St Columba & used by him as a retreat from Iona which he founded in 563. Now thought to be 'Aileach' founded 542 by St Brendan the Navigator but Columban traditions remain: this may be the island he knew as 'Elen', the burial place of his mother Eithne overlooks the monastery & his well is near the landing place.
