It is natural that this interest in fast horses should have the effect of improving the grade of horses in ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND DAIRYING 269 common use; and in this way the breeding of racers hashad a beneficial effect upon our animal industry. The breeding of draft horses did not begin first became important about the middle ofthe last century, and the Clydesdales somewhat later. The story of how the first fine sheep came to Americawas told in detail in a former chapter (see p. 98). After. Clydesdale Draft Horse the European wars were over (1815), the importation ofnew breeds was very gradual. Some Cotswolds werebrought to this country in the thirties and forties; South-downs and Oxford Downs still later; and afterwardsShropshires were introduced. The breeding of fine sheepand hogs was followed in certain localities before theCivil War. But after the year 1870 this work was givena great impetus through the formation of breedersassociations. 270 AGRICULTURE IN THE UNITED STATES Very few high grade cattle were to be found in theAmerican colonies. The Dutch brought Holsteins toNew Netherland, but the animals became mixed withpoorer stock. Before 1800, Shorthorns were broughtinto Virginia, Maryland, and New York, and between1830 and 1840 there was an importing company in this time. Guernseys were brought to New Hamp-shire. Some Herefords were to be found in this countrybefore the Civil War, but they first attracted attention
