View S of Mid Gleniron I multiphase prehistoric chambered tomb, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland, UK, showing the N chamber & entrance facade (R). Starting with the S one, two rectangular Neolithic burial chambers with entrances facing NNE were enclosed in two separate small squarish cairns. A third, lateral chamber entered from the W was built between them. All three were incorporated into a Clyde type long cairn with a crescentic forecourt & facade in front of the N chamber. The entrance & forecourt were ritually blocked with slabs & smaller stones. In the Bronze Age the Neolithic burials had been largely cleared out & 7 (or 9) cremations contained in cinerary urns inserted into the SE flank of the cairn. There are several other cairns close by including Mid Gleniron II chambered long cairn 120m SE of Mid Gleniron I. To the S of each long cairn is a separate cairn: that S of I is almost square; a stone setting, cremated bone & potsherds were found in its central area. A stone box-like chamber, cremated bone & small sherds were discovered in the central area of the round cairn S of II.
