Bronze statue of Leonidas at Thermopylae, c20th century. This small monument commemorates the battle in 480 BC in which a small band of about Spartan soldiers held off a huge Persian army. Leonidas I (died 480 BC) was a warrior king of the Greek city-state of Sparta.
