Epoxy-impregnated graphite fibres being wound onto a metal core. This material, also known as carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), produces a composite that is stronger than its component materials. CFRP is now used in a variety of applications, such as aerospace and sporting goods, where high strength allied to low structural weight is desirable in complex component shapes. In addition, CFRP offers excellent stiffness, good chemical resistance and low radar reflectivity, the latter having particular use in the US 'Stealth' aircraft projects.
