The left bank of the Rhine, the valley of the Moselle, theland along the Lower Main andthe Upper Rhine, were civilizedby the Romans much more com-pletely than the more distantBelgium. Under the protectionof the great fortresses, a multi-tude of flourishing municipalcommunities sprang up: on theLower Rhine, Colonia Agrippi-nensis, founded in 51 by lengths, constituted the third and lastchief feature. The organ was as a rulemade of bronze. The organist standsbehind his instrument, and pumps withhis feet. The trumpeter {cornicen) standsat his side; his long garment which hangsfrom his neck, and has short sleeves, turns into trousers which reach to hisknees; a broad blue band floats from hisshoulders. The stones used in the mosaic are of various sizes and materials (marble, limestone, baked clay, and glass). The colors are numerous, —black, gray, white, vermilion, pur-plish-red, violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, and brown. (From von Wilmowsky.).
