Coffee, sugar and cacao are raised on the Isth-mus, but of the two former not enough to supplythe local demand. The development of the cacaoindustry to large proportions seems probable, asseveral foreign corporations are experimenting on aconsiderable scale. Cocoanuts are easily grownalong both coasts of the Isthmus. A new grovetakes about five years to come into bearing, costingan average of about three dollars a tree. Once es-tablished the trees bring in a revenue of about onedollar each at present prices and, as the demand forPanama cocoanuts is steady, the industry seems tooffer attractive possibilities.
