Marble statue Christopher Columbus top granite plinth in front of glass brick water tank skyscrapers, Columbus Circle, New York

Columbus Circle, at the south-west corner of Central Park, was planned as a grand entrance to one of the largest park's in the world. At the intersection of Broadway, Central Park West, Central Park South and 8th Avenue, it is one of the few roundabouts in New York City. The statue of Christopher Columbus, topping a 70 ft (21m) granite column in the centre of the Circle, dates to 1892, the 400th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America.
