Even duringthe Middle Ages their woollen manufactures were the best developed inEurope, and at various times the kings of England have induced Belgianartisans to move to England for the purpose of improving the factorywork. Since the great nations of Europe have declared Belgium ueutral. As a result, Belgium has enjoyed a wonderful industrialgrowth. Agriculture. —A very small pait of Belgium is below sea level ;but, as in the Netherlands, much of the country is so flat and fertilethat a view on the Belgian plain would closely resemble that in Fig-ure 392. More than half the inhabitants are engaged in agriculture,the chief products, besides live stock, being grain, flax, hemp, fruit, BELGIUM 377 and sugar beets. Among the farm animals, the Flemish ^ horses areespecially noted for their great size and strength. The Belgian method of farming forms a striking contrast to that in theUnited States; for instead of ranging from one hundred to several thou-sand acres, farms in Belgium usuallycontain not more than two or threeacre
