Figure i. leading shoot killed by white-pine weevils usually extends to a point below the topmost whorl of branches only, but many instances have been observed in which the tree has been killed below the second, or even the third, whorl from the top (figure i). When thejleader is destroyed in this way, the laterals in the topmost living whorl of branches compete for supremacy. In some instances one lateral succeeds in overtopping the others and takes the lead, and in such a case the tree either outgrows the injury or a bayonet trunk results. Sometimes, however, two or more laterals may take the lead, and produce a forked tree. In some cases weevil injury may render commercially Please note that these images are extracted from scanned page images that may have been digitally enhanced for readability - coloration and appearance of these illustrations may not perfectly resemble the original Craighead, Frank C.
