COLUMBUS, Ohio — Maj. Eric Williams presented the United States Marine Corps and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) National Collegiate Coach of the Year award for NCAA Division I to Vic Schaefer, Mississippi State University's women’s basketball coach in Starkville, Mississippi, during the 2018 WBCA Convention at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Columbus, Ohio, March 30. Marines attended WBCA to engage with women of all experience levels and inform them about opportunities within the Corps. This year, the Marine Corps celebrates 100 years since women first joined the Corps, an anniversary celebrated for the progress of women who now have the ability to join any occupational specialty within the Marines. Williams is the commanding officer of Recruiting Station Charleston, West Virginia. Before announcing the winners, he made a statement in honor of the centennial of woman Marines: “For the past century, women have been winning battles — both personal, and on behalf of our nation and its communities.”
