On April 22, 1856, George Esterly patented a straddle-row cultivator, and began the manufacture on a large scale. Why soils are tilled. — We have already learned that plants mil not grow unless their roots have a suitable home and feeding ground. An important factor in creating this suitable home is to have the soil in good physical condition; that is, to have good soil texture. Tillage is the best means of improving the texture of soil. The following are some of the reasons why soils are improved by tillage: (1) Tillage makes the soil finer and deeper, so that roots can reach farther.
