Porto is the second city Portugal after Lisbon. Located on the estuary of the Douro River in Northern Portugal, it is one of the oldest populated centres in Europe. Its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Porto has many churches, but here we see probably its most unusual - the twinned Carmo and Carmelitas churches. They are housed side-by side in one unusually wide building, separated by an astonishingly narrow house. Evidently, the idea was to keep the naughty monks (of Carmo) and nuns (of Carmelita) away from each other, before they were tempted to break a few vows of chastity. ThatÕs a true story. I reckon itÕs a bit like having two rival burger joints next door to each other. This is the beautiful blue and white tiling decoration on the side of the Carmo.
