The weight ofthe engine was four tons, and it was drawn by three horses, when using de-livery hose of 2J inch diameter with a nozzle of li inches and a steam pressureof 120 lbs., a height of 170 feet and a distance of 210 feet were obtained. One of these 25 cwt. single cylinder engines was foundto have exerted a power equal to 32^ horses, or 1£ horse power for each engine. In this year Messrs. Shand, Mason & Co., constructed 17 steamfire engines, two for the London Fire Brigade, two for Lisbon, three for theBombay and Barsoda Railway Company, four for Russia, two for New Zea-land, one for Austria, one for Poland, one for Denmark and one for Dublin.
