The church was opened for public wor-ship on 18th. April, 1881, the preachers onthe occasion being Rev. Dr. Walter , of Edinburgh, and Rev. Dr. Laid-law, of the West Church. The pulpit wasoccupied in the ensuing months by manyof the most popular preachers in the FreeChurch from various parts of the this time the necessary steps werebeing taken to secure a minister for thechurch, and .several names were under con-sideration. From the opening of thechurch, Rev. George Adam Smith, ,wiio was then filling the place of ProfessorRobertson Smith in the Free Church Col-lege, had frequently acted as pulpit supply,and the young Hebrew tutors ministra-tions proved so very acceptable that he wasunanimously called to be the first ministerof the church.
