At the House of St. Michael and All Angels inPhiladelphia the young colored girls receive similarly compre-hensive training in housework and some of them have left to takepositions in domestic service. In all the residential institutions, a great deal of sewing isnecessary in order to keep the childrens clothes and the house-hold linen in good order. In the larger institutions, one or moreseamstresses are employed. In some of the smaller ones a seam-stress comes in occasionally by the day. The older girls in theinstitutions usually help with the mending and sometimeswith the making of simple garments for the
