The target practice was done under theofficial iuspection of Lieutenant Barthalow, who officially reported theresult to the Navy Department. The shooting is claimed to be the best ever done in the w^orld by anygun crews of any navy at any time or at any place. Marvelous as thisseems for new men to perform, I have been unable to find that thesame is not true. This shooting was done under the official inspection REPORT OF THE ADJUTANT GENERAL 27. The scores were madeat a range of 1,600 yards, at a regulation target, with 4-inch guns, withthe Marblehead traveling at a speed of eight knots. Sixty-five consecu-tive hits were made with the 4-inch guns, which is claimed to be therecord.
