Hong Kong Protests: A woman clutching a bag and a cell phone goes about her daily shopping next to pro-democracy protesters in the Causeway Bay shopping district near the Sogo department store. Sit-down protests began in Hong Kong on September 28, 2014. The protesters want true universal suffrage and the general public, or their elected representatives, to be able to nominate candidates -- with a low threshold of votes from any nominating committee -- for Hong Kong Chief Executive elections beginning 2017. This was ruled out by Beijing in August when the National People's Congress Standing Committee gave an extremely conservative interpretation of Article 45 of the Basic Law (Hong Kong's mini constitution) which deals with the election of chief executives. It said for a candidate to stand, he or she had to get over 50 percent of the votes in any nominating committee'', though it does allow for one person, one vote. At present, Hong Kong's Chief Executive is chosen by an Election Committee of 1,200 people in a city of over seven million people. The current Chief Executive, Leung Chun-ying, only got 689 votes - hence his nickname '689''-- or sahm baht gow in Cantonese. © Robert SC Kemp/Alamy Live News
