Streptococcus vaccine. Phial containing a solution of the pneumococcal vaccine Prevenar, which contains proteins from several strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. S. pneumonia can cause a number of diseases including meningitis, septicaemia (blood poisoning), pneumonia and ear infections. Vaccines provide protection against disease by priming the body's immune system, without causing infection. White blood cells are produced that can fight any future infection with the same strains of the bacteria. As of 2006 the vaccine is given to children at two, four and thirteen months.
