Andromeda constellation, 15th century artwork. Engraving of the Princess Andromeda chained to two trees, with Latin text. Andromeda was the princess rescued from a sea monster by the Greek hero Perseus. The black asterisks show the position of the stars that make up this constellation. This artwork is from the 1482 edition of Hyginus's Poeticon Astronomicon (Poetic Astronomy). This 1st-century BC star atlas was republished several times in the medieval period with woodcut engravings of the stars and constellations.
