Steam-powered mine engine. 18th-century illustration of a mining engine powered by steam. Engines such as this were used to pump water out of mines to prevent them from flooding. Artwork from 'Mineralogia Cornubiensis: A Treatise on Minerals, Mines and Mining' (1778) by British antiquary William Pryce (). This work was a history of mining in Cornwall. The dedication is to John Price of Penzance, who was high sheriff for the county of Cornwall in 1774.
