Proteinase inhibitor. Molecular model showing the secondary structure of alpha-1 proteinase inhibitor, also known as alpha 1-antitrypsin. This protein is a type of serine protease inhibitor (serpin) and is named after its ability to covalently bind and irreversibly inactivate serine proteases, including the digestive enzyme trypsin. It plays a key role in mediating inflammation and a deficiency results in the lung disease emphysema. It is being investigated as a potential drug molecule.
