Cerise poppy (Papaver sp. ) head. Poppies are a common weed in recently disturbed ground in the Northern Hemisphere. Their seeds can live in the soil for 40 years, so crop fields must be regularly sprayed with herbicides. Poppies are annual herbaceous plants which grow to 40-70 centimetres in height.
