Iraq: The Wedding Banquet, Maqamat al-Hariri by al-Hariri of Basra (1054 - 10 September 1122), c. 1225-1235. The ‘Maqama’ are a collection of picaresque Arabic tales written in the form of rhymed prose in which rhetorical extravagance is conspicuous. The style was invented in the 10th century by Badi al-Zaman al-Hamadhani and extended by Abu Muhammad al-Qasim ibn Ali al-Hariri of Basra the following century. Al-Hariri was an Arab poet and scholar, and a high government official of the Seljuks. His best known work was his Maqamat al-Hariri, a collection of over 50 stories.
