Mr. Duncan lived what might be called a publiclife ; yet it was through a certain evident fitness thatled him to be called to its duties, rather than from hisown seeking. A short time previous to his admissionto the bar, he was elected major in the HaverhillLight Infantry; and, passing through the variousgrades of militia service, he rose to the rank of colo-nel, by which title he was afterwards commonly ad-dressed.
