Caption: Ser'xu, Sichuan, China - Aug 2002. An ethnic Tibetan Khampa performing in the dance competition at the Ser'xu Horseracing festival in Eastern Tibet. Born out of the Great Clan Gatherings when Tibet was tribal and clans would gather to settle disputes over land, leadership and who had the fastest horse, the summer horseracing festivals are still the main annual event in the former kingdom of Kham. Dressed in full traditional costume (fox skin cloaks covered with silk brocade, shirts with oversized sleves and laden with amber, turquoise and Himalayan coral) tribes and villages compete for the esteemed title of Best Dancers.
