The Japanese easily defeated the Chinese in a short war(1894-1895). Korea was declared independent (which practi-cally meant opening it up to Japan), but Russia intervened toprevent the Japanese from getting a foothold on the induced China instead to permit her to build a railroadacross Manchuria and to lease Port Arthur to her.
