A visitor to Alaska, USA, reads an outdoor wooden sign that gives a brief history of Sitka, which was called New Archangel when it was the capital of Russian territory before Russia sold Alaska to the United States in 1867. Among the sights to see of Sitka’s Russian heritage is the 1848 Saint Michael's Russian Orthodox Cathedral that was destroyed by fire in 1966 but rebuilt as a replica with its onion-shaped dome and needle-shaped bell tower topped by golden crosses. Many of the Russian-era icons were saved from the conflagration and are on display inside the church.
